Antimicrobial Stewardship in the Fight Against Antibiotic Resistance by Allyson Pouchet

Antimicrobial stewardship is a cornerstone in the fight against antibiotic resistance and preserving the effectiveness of these critical therapies. As pharmacists, our role is multifaceted and essential.

We ensure appropriate antibiotic use by evaluating prescriptions for indications, spectrum of activity, and duration to match the clinical need. This prevents overuse and misuse, which are significant drivers of resistance. We can do so by being an integral part of healthcare teams where we practice and having access to documentation as it relates to diagnosis of patients requiring antimicrobials and by guiding medical officers with evidence based information.

Our expertise in optimizing dosing regimens ensures antibiotics achieve the desired therapeutic effect while minimizing toxicity and resistance development. This includes adjusting doses for patients with organ dysfunction(reduction in renal patients etc), drug and food interactions, or specific infection types(lab tests should be used when appropriate).

Equally important is our role in educating patients and healthcare providers. For patients, this involves explaining the importance of completing their prescribed course and the risks of improper use not only on dispensing but we can also host workshops and lectures to pass on this information at our clinics in a simple way to get the impact we desire . For healthcare providers, we offer guidance on emerging resistance patterns, alternative therapies, and best practices in prescribing. This must be backed with evidence .Through these efforts, pharmacists contribute significantly to reducing resistance rates, improving patient outcomes, and safeguarding public health for future generations.
